Model Making Skills

After a few hours of work,

and a few fingers that hurt...

The Architecture program in Citytech facilitates the development of model making skills since the very beginning. During my first semester at the college the class of  ARCH1111 or Foundation I, was the experience that sharpened my innate ability for what I used to call "arts and crafts". Model making, as I have learned now, is the artistic part that complements a great schematic design presentation. Fifty percent of the successful communication between architect and client relies heavily on the three dimensional description the idea; the other fifty percent, off course, is the more technical approach of the schematic set of drawings.

As the final project of this class, Prof. Darryl Cook gave us a little introduction to the language of design. I would say that this amazing professor went out of his way to help us "see" these concepts that were extremely abstract and even foreign for the beginner. From an image of an urban pattern we were guided to approach the playfulness of the design development phase. We were able to practice what it means to have an organized approach at a design which grows from a conversation between a diagram or partii, and the 3D models.

Here are some images of these models made for that project:

In addition to the ARCH1111 class, the program of Architecture in Citytech offers a second foundation course that prepares the student for the tough design classes waiting for us in the next semesters. The Foundation II or ARCH1211 course is dedicated to provide the student with the tools needed in order to prepare a successful presentation for an architectural project.

The following images correspond to a project of my second semester for the ARCH1211 class in which we dedicated a portion of the time to the development of a contour model; the other part of the project was to explore the relationship between compressive and expansive spaces in different scales. The final product consisted of a set of drawings containing floor plans, sections and elevations of the structures designed as well as the contour and study models.
