CAD Drawing Skills

The following images pertain to the semester project of one of the most technical classes offered in the Architectural program of Citytech, this is the advanced class of CAD drawing or ARCH2300. For this project we worked in the gut renovation of a brownstone located in Brooklyn. The program also included the design of an ADA compliant apartment on the Garden level, or fist floor. One of the tasks  required for the project was to go to the job site to take pictures of the house in order to develop the front elevation drawing as accurate as possible.

The entire set consisted of fifteen drawing that included even electrical and reflected ceiling plans. An enormous amount of work for the short period of twelve weeks; however, covering important topics as the code requirements for ADA compliant spaces, exits and public spaces, stairs design and some basic fire safety requirements were a great addition to the experience. Here are some examples of the type of drawing developed for this particular class.

A100- COVER SHEET
During the development of this drawing we covered several important points that pertained to the
correct presentation of any architectural project such as: the importance of the plot plan, the key plan, the development of a specified scope of work, the zoning calculations and the general notes. We also learn to develop a plumbing raiser diagram to inform the number of plumbing fixtures proposed on the project at each floor.
A201- PROPOSED CELLAR, GARDEN AND SECOND FLOOR PLANS
The demanding process of developing an ADA compliant apartment with an access ramp on garden floor was definitively the  highlight of this particular drawing.

A202- PROPOSED THIRD AND FOURTH PLANS, AND ROOF PLAN

Also, the amount of detail embedded on the cross reference that is required on a complete set of drawings, made the floor plans a special treat to develop the skill of organization. The elevations, section, and call out symbols all have to compile with the rest of the set.

A301- FRONT AND BACK ELEVATIONS
As mentioned before the front elevation was developed by each student based on the pictures taken from the actual house; However, the information for the floor to ceiling height was given by the professor. This did not allowed for a 100% accuracy when placing the windows at the required height because they had to fit within the specified dimensions.

A302- CROSS AND LONGITUDINAL SECTIONS
A complex and time consuming drawing for which we cover the basic code requirements for stair design.

A401- EXTERIOR ENLARGED DETAILS

With the purpose of providing further specifications on the materials and the dimensions of some important areas on the section drawings, the enlarged exterior details were created. With specifications for the foundation detail, the window detail and the cornice detail, we had a chance to refresh and expand basic knowledge of construction materials.

A602-ENLARGED BATHROOM AND KITCHEN PLANS
AND  STAIR DETAIL

A little more training on detailing and specifying the dimensions and materials used, only in this particular drawing the objective was to develop enlarged plans that could inform the design of the typical bathroom and kitchen for the second floor as it was to be mirrored on the third and fourth floors.
